Fourth International Workshop on Quality of Experience Management (QoE- Management 2020) collocated with NetSoft 2020 in Ghent, Belgium

Fourth International Workshop on Quality of Experience Management (QoE-Management)

28th and 29th of June 2020
conjunction with the IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization 2020 (NetSoft 2020)
Gent, Belgium

Recent technological advances have enabled a constant proliferation of novel immersive and interactive services that pose ever-increasing demands to our communication ecosystem. While service and application management has typically been centered around a set of Quality of Service parameters (e.g., packet loss, delay, jitter), there is a clear need to understand and model the impact of management decisions on Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics as perceived by the end-user. To date, a significant amount of research has been devoted to understanding, measuring, and modeling QoE for a variety of media services. The next step is to explore methods that actively exploit such knowledge to improve and manage the quality of multimedia services, while at the same time ensuring efficient and cost-effective network operations. Moreover, with many different players involved in the end-to-end service delivery chain, identifying the root causes of QoE impairments and finding effective solutions for meeting the end-users' requirements and expectations in terms of service quality is a challenging and complex problem.

QoE-Management 2020 aims at providing an international forum for researchers addressing emerging concepts and challenges related to managing QoE for networked services. The workshop addresses QoE management in the context of ongoing developments, such as the move to 5G and virtualized networks; the exploitation of big data analytics and machine learning in the domains of QoE modeling and monitoring; and solutions targeting emerging complex, interactive, and immersive service scenarios. In order to encourage collaboration, the workshop is distributed in two days: seminar and workshop paper presentations.

  • 28/06/2020: Seminar. Researchers with expertise in different areas of QoE research will sit together to brainstorm on different topics.
  • 29/06/2020: Workshop papers presentation. Original full and short paper presentations and a motivating keynote will thoroughly explore this challenging topic.

Topics of interest: SDN, NFV, and QoE; QoE-aware network and application management; Characterization and modeling of QoE; QoE monitoring and measurement, QoE oriented coding; Quality management applied to different business sectors and use cases; Experimental approaches for QoE management. In addition, we encourage the submission of novel, provocative ideas or late-breaking results that have the potential to generate lively debate and new perspectives as short papers or Seminar topics.

Important dates:
  • Paper submission deadline: February 15, 2020; March 2nd (extension)
  • Acceptance notification: March 23, 2020
  • Camera-ready papers: April 6, 2020
For the Seminar topics:

  • Topic submission deadline: May 15, 2020
  • Acceptance notification: June 1, 2020

Authors should submit their papers and seminar topics electronically via the EDAS online submission system.

Impact factor: Conferences vs. Journals

This week, my boss (Hermann Hellwagner) entered my office with the following paper:

Jilin Chen and Joseph A. Konstan. 2009. Conference paper selectivity and impact. Commun. ACM 53, 6 (June 2009), 79-83. DOI=10.1145/1743546.1743569 http://doi.acm.org/10.1145/1743546.1743569

Reading the abstract ...
Studying the metadata of the ACM Digital Library (http://www.acm.org/dl), we found that papers in low-acceptance-rate conferences have higher impact than those in high-acceptance-rate conferences within ACM, where impact is measured by the number of citations received. We also found that highly selective conferences—those that accept 30% or less of submissions—are cited at a rate comparable to or greater than ACM Transactions and journals.
... I got confirmation that submitting papers to high-quality conferences is still a good thing and - next to that - I was wondering whether someone has done something similar for the IEEE Computer Society (doing a quick/simple search in CSDL, I couldn't find it).

Many (young) researchers are confronted with the requirement (coming from their institution, Ph.D. supervisor, etc.) submitting papers to journals rather than conferences. This is often justified with the higher impact factor of journals (compared to conferences). Another reason - I think - is that submitting papers to journals is much cheaper than conferences due to travel expenses. However, I believe attending a high-quality conference and presenting a paper there, discussing with other researchers on-site/face-to-face and socializing with them (having dinner etc) is much more worth, specifically when someone enters a new domain (btw. successful journal publications will then follow automatically, no worries).

While I certainly agree with the conclusions from the article mentioned above, I think one important aspect is missing. If
papers in highly selective conferences—acceptance rates of 30% or less—should continue to be treated as first-class research contributions with impact comparable to, or better than, journal papers
then what's the reason of having journal publications (or journals at all ...)? Both conference proceedings and journals are accessible through digital libraries offering search facilities better than the office desk with a huge stack of paper. Thus, having it printed somewhere can no longer be the reason. Ah yes, there was this other issue with the travel expenses which is acknowledged but probably it's worth thinking about new ways of remote participation (e.g., I'm attending ACM MMSys'11 end of February which enables that) or other means of interaction, e.g., through social networks. The latter is something that is currently being explored within the IEEE Computer Society, specifically within Computing Now but also the newly established Special Technical Communities (STCs) as mentioned by Sorel Reisman in his IEEE Computer president's message from January 2011.
By the end of 2011, we'll have launched pilot Special Technical Communities in social networking, cloud computing, gaming, education, software engineering, and green computing.
If you're interested in joining the first one - social networking - please contact me via http://www.computer.org/stcsn.

Multimedia conferences this week

I just saw on my calendar that this week there are a couple of multimedia-related events worth to report here:
  • MMedia2010 (June 13-19, 2010 - Athens/Glyfada, Greece), 2nd International Conference on Advances in Multimedia, where our department had a couple of papers in the program ranging from self-organizing multimedia systems and transcoding to peer-to-peer architectures.
  • WoWMoM2010 (June 14-17, 2010 - Montreal, Canada), International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks, where the program covers all layers in the network related to wireless and multimedia. Interestingly, the program includes a PhD forum and industry track.
  • IWQoS2010 (June 16-19, 2010 - Beijing, China), International Workshop on Quality of Service, where Henning Schulzrinne is giving a keynote entitled "25 years of quality of service research - where next?". In general, this workshop is the QoS workshop in the world and the program is available here (there's a session about overlays and peer-to-peer networks).
  • FMN2010 (June 17-18, 2010 - Krakow, Poland), 3rd International Workshop on Future Multimedia Networking, where the program is only available as PDF and there's also a session on QoS and Quality of Experience (QoE).

Beyond the Internet? − Innovations for future networks and services

ITU-T Kaleidoscope event, Pune, India, 13-15 Dec 2010
Beyond the Internet? - Innovations for future networks and services - is the third in a series of peer-reviewed academic conferences that aims at increasing the dialogue between experts working on the standardization of information and communications technologies (ICTs) and academia. By viewing technologies through a “Kaleidoscope”, these forward looking events also seek to identify new topics for standardization.
Thus far, the Internet has proven to be robust and flexible and its continuous evolution has seen growth from a small experiment into a giant collaborative network capable of meeting the demands of more than one billion users. The rise of mobile access and its integration with optical transport networks present new challenges. Some experts question whether the current underlying architecture is sufficiently robust to address future demands or if a “clean slate” approach is needed to develop a really innovative Internet of the future.
Kaleidoscope 2010 will highlight multidisciplinary aspects of future Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) including future services and applications demand as well as social and economic impacts. The focus will be on innovative technologies and contributors might have to challenge the fundamental networking design principles of the Internet.
This academic conference is calling for original papers, from the world’s universities, industry and academic institutions. Accepted papers will be made available through the IEEE Xplore. A prize fund totaling $10,000 will be awarded by the three best papers. Young Author Recognition certificates will be also issued.
New this year
In addition to a local universities exhibition, outstanding keynote speakers and invited papers, ITU Kaleidoscope 2010 will host Standards corner, a series of standardization tutorials and Jules Verne’s corner, a special space for science fiction writers and dreamers.

WISMA 2010 approaching

CALL for PAPERS
Workshop on Interoperable Social Multimedia Applications (WISMA 2010)
11th International Workshop of the Multimedia Metadata Community

Submission due: 14th March 2010 - Workshop dates: 19th-20th May 2010
Workshop venue: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona (Spain)

In the Web 2.0, a growing amount of multimedia content is being shared on Social Networks. Due to the dynamic and ubiquitous nature of this content (and associated descriptors), new interesting challenges for  indexing, access, and search and retrieval have arisen. In addition, there is a growing concern on privacy protection, as a lot of personal data is being exchanged. Teenagers (and even younger kids), for example, require special protection applications; while adults are willing to have a higher control over the access to content. Furthermore, the integration of mobile technologies with the Web 2.0 applications is also an interesting area of research that needs to be addressed; not only in terms of content protection, but also considering the implementation of new and enriched context-aware applications. Finally, social multimedia is also expected to improve the performance of traditional multimedia information search and retrieval approaches by contributing to bridge the semantic gap. The integration of these aspects, however, is not trivial and has created a new interdisciplinary area of research.

In any case, there is a common issue that needs to be addressed in all the previously identified social multimedia applications: the interoperability and extensibility of their applications. Thus, the workshop is particularly interested in research contributions based on standards.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Privacy in social networks
• Access control in social networks
• Social media analysis
• Social media retrieval
• Context-awareness in social networks
• Mobile applications scenario
• Social networks ontologies and interoperability
• Security and privacy ontologies
• Content distribution over social networks
• Multimedia ontologies and interoperability
• Multimedia search and retrieval
• Semantic metadata management
• Collaborative tagging
• Interaction between access control and privacy policies
• Social networks and policy languages
• Policy management

Research Papers: Papers should describe original and significant work in
the research practice of related topics.
(i) Long papers: up to 8 pages, will normally be focused on research studies, applications and experiments.
(ii) Short papers: up to 4 pages, will be particularly suitable for reporting work-in-progress, interim results, or as a position paper submission.
