3rd International Conference on Immersive Telecommunications

SCOPE AND GOAL OF THE CONFERENCE

Immersive telecommunications is an emerging multi-disciplinary field with contributions from telecommunications and networking, signal processing, computer vision, virtual reality, spatial audio processing, user interfaces, and human factors. IMMERSCOM aims to bring researchers and scientists from academia and industry together to advance the state of the art in immersive telecommunications sciences, technologies and systems.

TOPICS

The conference solicits original technical papers that are not previously published or currently under review for publication elsewhere. General themes of the conference include but are not limited to:
  • Scene Capture for Immersive Communication: Multi-camera and depth sensor based 3D video capture systems, multimodal scene capture, 3D reconstruction and other representations from capture data, view synthesis and interpolation, pervasive sensing
  • Communications and Networking for Immersive Applications: Communication for rich 3D visualization, tele-presence, and mixed/augmented reality; QoS for immersive applications; robustness to loss over networks, low latency communication, real-time protocols, synchronization
  • Computer Vision for Immersive Communication: 3D reconstruction and modeling, activity detection, face and pose detection and recognition, eye contact, gesture recognition, body tracking, mobility issues, tele-reality, data fusion
  • User Interfaces and Human Factors for Immersive Experiences: Stereoscopic, auto-stereoscopic and multi-view displays and interfaces; multi-projector and projector-camera systems;mixed/augmented reality interfaces, interactive environment interfaces, affective user interfaces, haptics; handheld and wearable device interfaces, multimodal interfaces, tele-presence interfaces; perceptual interfaces, human factors and usability
  • AudioProcessing for Immersive Communication: Multi-channel echo cancellation, de-reverberation, spatial audio capture and synthesis, microphone and speaker arrays, source localization and diarization, multimodal processing
  • Multimedia Coding for Immersive Communication: Coding of audio, video, multi-view video, and depth with various 3D representations; coding for distributed multimedia sensors (camera & microphone) networks, compressed sensing, real-time coding
  • Applications, Systems, and Architectures: Tele-presence; gaming; medical and bio-medical applications; educational systems; virtual museums, meetings and classrooms; social networking
TUTORIAL/POSTER/PANEL/DEMO/EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

Proposals for tutorials/posters/panels/demos/exhibitions related to Immersive Telecommunications technologies are solicited. Those who are interested are welcome to submit proposals to the respective Chairs. Please visit the Submissions page for details.

PUBLICATION

Accepted papers will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes of the Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (LNICST) series.The proceedings will be available in both soft and hard copies by Springer.

International Symposium on Multimedia over Wireless - ISMW 2009

One of the key elements in the convergence of future networks and services to IP technology is the efficient support of rich multimedia applications and services over wireless networks including sensor and mesh networks. The delivery and transport of multimedia in such wireless environments, to heterogeneous mobiles and users, is very challenging. The multimedia services should face many shortcomings caused mainly by the wireless channel unreliability and its sharing among many users, limited bandwidth, random time-varying fading effect, different protocols and standards, etc. Future multimedia services require innovation and advances in better MAC and routing protocols, session establishment and signaling architectures, cross-layer interaction and optimization, QoS provisioning and continuity, adaptive transmission techniques, and scalability support, among others.

The purpose of this symposium is to solicit high-quality theoretical and practical research on the landscape of recent advances on multimedia over wireless.

Submission

Please register and upload your paper via EDAS. All papers are limited to six printed pages, including text, figures and references, and must be written in English and follow the standard IEEE double-column format. The font size must be at least 10 points. All submitted papers would be judged based on their quality through a double peer-reviewing process. Accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings of IWCMC2009, which will be included in ACM/IEEE Digital Library (pending approval). Selected papers will be further considered for possible publication in a special issue of the Wiley Journal of "Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing (WCMC)," and "International Journal of Autonomous and Adaptive Communications Systems (IJAACS)". There will also be best paper and best symposium awards.

Key Technologies for Wireless Networking in the Next Decade

Report of a keynote given by Ian F. Akyildiz at AICCSA2008.

The keynote was very interesting as it provided a very good overview about existing/emerging technologies which are as follows:
  • xG Networks also referred to as dynamic spectrum access networks
  • Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN)
  • WiMAX
  • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN)
xG Networks
The next generation (xG) networks will follow a dynamic spectrum assigned (versus fixed spectrum assignment as exists today) where so-called unlicensed users may make use of any available spectrum in cases where licensed users do not use them. That is, they'll jump from one 'spectrum hole' to another based on their availabilities. To me, the concept is very similar to connection-oriented vs. connection-less services or circuit-switched vs. packet-switched networks ... it seems, history repeats again ;-)

In any case, the framework elements for dynamic spectrum assignment (aka cognitive radio) has been presented:
  • Spectrum sensing: what's available?
  • Spectrum decision: select the best channel available
  • Spectrum sharing: coordinate with other users
  • Spectrum mobility -> hand-off: in case the licensed user appears the unlicensed one has to jump to another hole...

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN)
This technology seems to be researched very well and there's a trend to merge channel allocation and routing. Also, cross-layer designs are making their way towards WMNs. The remaining challenge is how to manage the dynamics of WMNs?

WiMAX
Should be a cheap alternative to cable/DSL but research is rare because it's difficult to get funding therefore, at least in the US...

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN)
Basically, they've adopted (tweaking) tools from ad-hoc networks for WSNs which has become a paper writing race

As for WMNs, it seems it's heading towards cross-layer designs where the traditional layers are merged to a single communication module with the application layer sitting on-top.

Nano-Communication Networks
Finally, the next step will be the communication between nano devices that opens a huge amount of (new) research areas in the same way it was introduced when mirco devices began to communicate...
