Multimedia data are becoming the dominant source of traffic in the Internet and wireless networks. However, this trend creates serious challenges resulting from the explosive growth of ultra-high-definition video services and bandwidth-expensive applications, not to mention issues in networking/content delivery networks (CDN) and storage/cloud costs. Multimedia today is tightly coupled with economic issues, and profound changes need to be made in order to accommodate diversified network deployments, traffic dynamics, commercial structures, and economic viability within the ecosystem. Such considerations have brought together experts to study cost-effective technologies and profit-driven applications in this setting. Example applications include the tradeoff between costs and Quality of Experience (QoE) for cloud computing providers, economic resource utilization (e.g., spectrum, bandwidth, power control via pricing, and game theoretic and auction mechanisms), and revenue management for both service providers and network operators. However, there is a gap between theory and practice in bringing together multimedia and economics. Therefore, this special issue highlights economic models in multimedia communications and calls for state-of-the-art contributions across multidisciplinary boundaries as well as academia-industry gaps. These advanced economic techniques will reexamine the mathematical foundations of multimedia, beyond classical models and solution concepts, and eventually provide new visions of networks supporting multimedia traffic. Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Theoretical foundations for economic multimedia communication
  • Equilibria that capture the multimedia features of emerging video applications
  • Economic modeling for video coding/transmission over heterogeneous networks
  • Models and tools for video services in two-sided markets
  • Value-added video services in Internet or mobile data markets
  • Performance profiling of economic mechanisms for multimedia sources in future networks
  • Pricing schemes for video services in future heterogeneous networks
  • Optimization for multimedia services in heterogeneous networks
  • Edge computing for Internet of Things (IoT) multimedia communication
  • Social IoT: Multimedia transmission, distribution, and storage design
  • Methodologies for VR/360-degree multimedia transmissions
  • Net neutrality and privacy preservation in multimedia networking

The current Internet is under tremendous pressure due to the exponential growth in bandwidth demand, fueled by the transfer of video consumption to online distribution, IPTV, streaming services such as Netflix, and from phone networks to videoconferencing and Skype-like video communications. The Internet has also democratized the creation, distribution and sharing of user-generated video contents through services such as YouTube, Vimeo or Hulu. The situation is further aggravated by the emerging trends of adopting higher definition video streams, requesting more and more bandwidth. Indeed, the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) projects that video consumption will amount to 90% of the global consumer traffic by 2017. Another shift predicted by Cisco VNI is that most data communications will be wireless by 2018.

To cope with the bandwidth growth, the shift to wireless, and to solve other related issues (e.g., naming, security, etc) with the current Internet, new architectures for the future Internet have been proposed and prototyped. Examples include Content-Centric Networks (CCN) or Named Data Networking (NDN), or some content-based extensions to Software-Defined Networking (SDN), among others. None of these emerging architectures deals specifically with video distribution, as they need to support a wider range of services, but all would have to support videos in an efficient manner. Therefore, the study of video distribution over the future Internet is of primary importance: how well does future Internet architecture facilitate video delivery? What kind of video distribution mechanisms need to be created to run on the future Internet? How will video be supported in the wireless portion of the future Internet? Can the current video distribution mechanisms (such as end-to-end dynamic rate adaptation schemes) be used or even enhanced for the future Internet? What are subjective/objective metrics for performance measurement? How to provide real-time guarantees for live and interactive video streams?

While the topic is quite wide, we will narrow the focus of this special issue on the fundamental problems of video distribution and delivery in the future Internet. We invite submissions of high-quality original technical and survey papers, which have not been published previously, on video distribution in the future Internet, including the following non-exhaustive list of topics. Please note that all topics must be understood in the context of the future Internet as outlined above.
  • Network-assisted video distribution, network support for multimedia, specifically supporting wireless environments
  • New information-centric and software-defined architectures to support wired and wireless video streaming
  • Resource allocation for wired and wireless video distribution
  • Media streaming, distribution, and storage support in the future Internet
  • In-network caching/storage, named data retrieval, publish/subscribe for video distribution in wired and wireless networks
  • Next generation Content Delivery Networks (CDN)
  • Adaptive streaming and rate adaptation for video streaming in the future Internet for wired and wireless networks
  • Peer-to-peer aspects of video multimedia distribution, including scaling and capacity
  • QoS/QoE measurement and support for video distribution in the future Internet
  • User-generated content and social networks for multi-media
  • Video compression techniques explicitly supporting the future Internet
  • Big-Data mechanisms (say referral engines or content placement algorithms) for video content over future Internet
  • Social-aware video content distribution over future Internet
  • Integration of video distribution and multimedia computing over future Internet
  • Testbeds and measurements of video distribution over future Internet
  • Cost and economic models for video distribution over future Internet
  • Theoretical foundations for video distribution over future Internet, e.g., network coding, information theory, machine learning, etc

*Summary*
The move to web-based television has challenged the traditional
television value chain by allowing any IP-based network,  wired and
wireless, to deliver high quality television content. In this new
paradigm for content consumption, TV-related services are expected to
play a decisive role for fixed, nomadic and mobile devices over
heterogeneous networks.  Consequently, the rapid adoption of web-based
TV applications is fueled by user demands for social and
user-generated multimedia content, in addition to the traditional
linear and on-demand offerings. As well, the new television is social,
allowing exchange of ratings and comments between viewers; connected,
with content available on many devices and via many networks; and
smart, thanks to application stores and personalized offerings. As a
result, TV convergence, as a significant problem for next generation
networks and devices, is becoming a popular topic for network, device,
content and user experience research. Significant challenges need to
be addressed from heterogeneous bandwidth management, content
protection and distribution architectures to visual perception and
quality of experience.

*Scope:*
This special issue is focused on recent disruptions in IP-based and
Web-based TV. According to this framework, it wants to provide avenues
for future research in the emerging areas of social, connected and
smart TV. The targeted audience combines researchers in the many
aspects of the end to end delivery of converged TV services but also
practitioners and strategic business managers who need to know “what
is next” in terms of video and television services, applications and
the overall value chain.

The editors of this special issue solicit original and innovative
technical papers that include (but are not limited to) the following
topics:

- Next generation converged TV architecture and performance -
especially those combining heterogeneous networks and platforms

- Quality of experience in social TV systems and applications over
mobile and converged networks

- Performance of novel approaches to TV network design including
wireless Internet TV

- Analysis and simulation of TV services over heterogeneous networks

- Analysis and simulation of content distribution and transmission technologies

- Performance of novel content protection especially for Peer-to-Peer
and community TV viewing

- End-to-End TV quality of experience including monitoring, measuring
and user behavior

- Content modeling and metadata for next generation converged TV

Prospective authors should submit high quality, original manuscripts
that have not appeared, nor are under consideration, in any other

Call for Proposals - Special Issue

ACM - TOMCCAP is one of the world's leading journals on multimedia. As in previous years we are planning to publish a special issue in 2012. Proposals are accepted until May, 31th 2011. Each special issue is the responsibility of guest editors. If you wish to guest edit a special issue you should prepare a proposal as outlined below, then send this via e-mail to EiC Ralf Steinmetz (steinmetz.eic@kom.tu-darmstadt.de)

Proposals should:
  • Cover a current or emerging topic in the area of multimedia computing, communications and applications; 
  • Set out the importance of the special issue's topic in that area; 
  • Give a strategy for the recruitment of high quality papers; 
  • Indicate a draft time-scale in which the special issue could be produced (paper writing, reviewing, and submission of final copies to TOMCCAP), assuming the proposal is accepted. 

Unlike the years before, the special issue will be published as online-only issue in the ACM Digital Library. This gives the guest editors higher flexibility in the review process and the number of papers to be accepted, while yet ensuring a timely publication. A notification of acceptance for the proposals will be given until June, 10th 2011. Once a proposal is accepted we will contact you to discuss the further process.

Future Internet: Special Issue "Metadata and Markup"

This special issue of the journal Future Internet seeks papers reporting high quality theoretical or practical work on Metadata and Markup. As data about data, metadata describes information about documents, events, locations or people but also addresses qualitative aspects, language, and include information about context or conditions of use. It may be used for naming, describing, cataloguing, and indication ownership of a resource. Metadata helps to facilitate the understanding and the management of data objects. While the metadata describes characteristics about the data, the markup identifies the specific type of data content and acts as a container for that document instance. Mark-up languages allow for the inclusion of many types of metadata ranging from simple dates or keywords up to highly-granular information such as Dublin Core or e-GMS.

We are looking for high-quality, original papers on any aspect of Metadata and Markup including topics such as standards for supporting knowledge markup, e.g., RDFa, microformats, GRDDL, multimedia annotation (e.g., by using MPEG-7), collaborative, shared tagging and annotation, semantic annotation in Semantic Wikis, semantic authoring and publishing, document engineering, deriving semantics from document structure and content, ontology-based authoring and markup, knowledge markup in the Semantic Web, using semantic annotations to define knowledge, integrated software architecture based on semantic annotation, annotation of software components, linguistic aspects of semantic annotations, text mining for creating knowledge markup, mining semantic information from blogs, forums or news sources, collaborative, shared tagging and annotation, evaluation of annotation frameworks, deriving formal semantics from (flat or hierarchical) tagging systems, vocabularies and ontologies for semantic authoring and annotation, tools for supporting knowledge markup, semantic annotation, sematic authoring, etc.
